Norwegian Research Part 2 - Reider Toralf Bakke

Part 2 - Norwegian research

First step for researching any Scandinavian immigrant to Australia is to establish as much possible relevant information from Australian records. Immigration indexes, passenger lists, naturalisation certificates, service records, death indexes (may give parent's names), other random records in the Australian National Archives, or the relevant State Archives, newspapers online (Trove), family information, marriage/death certificates, etc.

Hopefully somewhere in all that hunting, you will come up with at least an approximate year of birth, maybe a parent name, a place of birth, a former residence or the nearest large town to where they lived. In this case, I've found all I need to know with a quick online search of the National Archives.

First stop - www.familysearch.org.
Click on 'search'
Click on 'Browse All Published Collections'
Under 'N' is Norway Burials, 1666-1927, Norway Baptisms, 1634-1927 and Norway Marriages 1660-1926.
My first search will be in 'Baptisms' looking for a Reidar Bakke born between 1880 and 1900. No luck.

Now I'll leave out the first name, but add his father's name. This brings up a possible sister, Signe Marie Bakke baptised 26 Dec 1889 Oslo, Oslo, Norway with parents: Adolf Bakke and Charlotte Holm. This could be really useful if it told me what parish in Oslo she was baptised in!

Further searches of 'Marriages' and 'Burials' using the name 'Adolf Bakke' bring up several entries of interest. A marriage in 1883 for a Adolf Olsen Bakke b.1859 (father: Ole Andersen Bakke) to Jensine Fredrikke Charlotte Jensen b.1864 (father: Lauritz Jensen), a possible daughter's marriage in 1913 (Snefrid Akselia Fransisca Bakke), a burial in 1890 probably for the Signe Marie baptised above, another burial for a Signe Maren Olava Bakke in 1894 with father Adolf, a burial for a Charlotte Bakke, wife of Adolf Bakke in 1896.

I've stored all this information away for now, as I have no creditable link at this stage to my Reidar Toralf Bakke, but it has given me some places to start searching for Reidar's baptism as these entries all took place in either the Trefoldighet Menighet (congregation/parish) or Kampen Menighet in Christiania (Oslo), apart from the ones in 'Oslo, Oslo'.

This reminds me to check out Adolf's address as stated in Reidar's service record - 17 Holand Gaden, Christiania. There is a website that lists street addresses in Christiania in 1899 and the parish they belong to:http://www.disnorge.no/cms/node/524 - from here I can see that 'Høland Gade' is in Kampen parish.
