Conserving precious family records

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is how to preserve precious family mementoes and fragile items. We are not experts in this field, so all we can do is direct you to some websites which have useful information. The link below is to the Australian Institute for Conservation of Cultural Material which has some very useful information and examples of restoration gone wrong... http://www.aiccm.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1168&Itemid=74 With the frequency of disasters this summer right across Australia, it is timely to find out those precious items held by your family and learn how to at least digitise them where possible by scanning, and to store them as safely as possible ( preferably not close to areas that flood or are inundated by tidal surges. We hold regular scanning days to digitise our own collections at Genealogy Sunshine Coast and many of our volunteers have learnt how to preserve their own collections as part of this pr

Unlock the Past Brisbane Seminar Tuesday 29 March 2011

Just received notice of a new seminar in Brisbane courtesy of Unlock the Past -  some interesting presenters... and there is a lot of recent news on military history and photos found in France... so for all those interested, make sure you book on the Unlock the Past website...  A late decision has been made to hold a FREE seminar in Brisbane on Tuesday afternoon 29 March at Kedron-Wavell Services Club, 375 Hamilton Rd, Chermside.   This is to take advantage of several interstate historians/presenters in Brisbane at the time. There will be a partial focus on military history with talks on: Australia at War  by military historian and battlefield tour operator  Mat McLachlan Researching Military Ancestors in Australia  by Shauna Hicks Added to this will be two talks of wide general interest to family historians: FamilySearch, including tips on using the New Family Search  - Paul Parton (from Sydney). Paul is one of our most popular presenters at events around the country

WORLDCAT - what a treasure trove!

A great resource for locating information on places and people, to share information on useful resources and of course, a great tool for locating a copy of a book anywhere in the world.  http://www.worldcat.org/ You can find the holdings of our local Sunshine Coast Regional Libraries, as well as the State Library of Queensland and the John Oxley Library.  By typing in your postcode, you can find the nearest library which might hold a copy of a title of interest to you.  You can also create a log in for yourself, and create Lists of useful resources.  We have created a basic list of local Sunshine Coast local history titles which we have created detailed indexes for. The list currently appearing is not complete ( only half of the titles are appearing currently) but keep an eye on the Worldcat site and also on our Genealogy Sunshine Coast website under GSC Indexes for the latest information that we have added.

Check our GSC website for all the latest events ...

Make sure you keep a regular check on our Genealogy Sunshine Coast website for all the updated information about what is happening at our Resource Centre in Petrie Park, Nambour, located just opposite the swimming pool in Petrie Park Road. You can find our website at  http://sites.google.com/site/genealogysunshinecoastinc/ There is information on our monthly hands on workshops on all aspects of genealogy, especially using computers and scanners, digital cameras and genealogy software such as Rootsmagic 4 and Legacy 7.5. You are very welcome to attend our monthly meetings, held on the second Saturday of each month, commencing at 9.30am. It's a great chance to hear a guest speaker and meet many of our members, ranging from beginners to very experienced researchers.

Welcome to Genealogy Sunshine Coast...

2011 will be an interesting year for our dedicated band of family historians, genealogists and local historians on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. For the last three years, our volunteer indexers and scanners have been busy creating digital records from our paper files of local and family history of the Sunshine Coast area, and assorted records from throughout Australia and beyond. In 2011, we hope to share much of this information via our website and through online websites such as Worldcat and Google Maps to create a detailed historical  record of the Sunshine Coast region, and particularly those areas which were encompassed by the old Maroochy Shire boundaries.
