Part 18 - Norwegian research In the Oslo Domkirke parish register 1848-1865 image 383 we have: No. 10, 1859, Jan 31, bachelor, snedkersvend Ole Andersen Bakke and single woman Juliane Petrine Eriksdatter . Ole born Aurskog??, living ??, ag e 29 and a half years, father: Anders Olsen, gaardbruger (farmer), bestman: Peder Olsen AND Juliane born Aker, age 24 and a quarter years, father: Erik Pedersen (Norman??), gartner (gardener), bestman: Edvard Eriksen. Banns 5, 12, 19th Dec. Both vaccinated for smallpox. I think Peder Olsen's occupation is 'Høker' which is a provisions dealer and Edvard Eriksen's occupation is perhaps Skomager..... (some sort of shoemaker). Details like this can always be checked later from other records if clarification is needed. This record confirms Ole's full name of Ole Andersen Bakke - for some reason it was not transcribed properly on FamilySearch. Norwegian Research Part 17 In FamilySearch under 'Norway Marriages, 1660-1926', I haven't found a marriage for an Ole Andersen Bakke, but did find one under 'Ole Andersen'. Part 16 - Norwegian research Sofie Amalie's baptism is in the same register - her birth was 2 Aug 1865 and baptism 17 Sep 1865. Her parents are listed as snedker (cabinetmaker) Ole Andersen Bakke and Juliane Petrine Eriksdatter . Looking back at Oscar's baptism I can see his mother's name kind of looks like 'Eriksdatter' but I don't think I would have worked that out without finding her name some where else.  At this stage I haven't looked for Adolf's baptism as I don't know which parish in Christiania to look in, so I'll assume his mother is Juliane Petrine Eriksdatter for now, and should find confirmation of that when I find hers and Ole's marriage. Part 15 - Norwegian research Although I still have a few more parish records to obtain for Adolf Olsen Bakke's family, I'm more interested now in moving on to his father's family. Part 12 - Norwegian research I'll now have a look for Adolf Olsen Bakke and Jensine Fredrikke Charlotte Jensen 's marriage.  I already know it was on 11 Feb 1883 in Trefoldighet parish, Christiania from FamilySearch, so it is an easy matter  to go to Digitalarkivet, find the Oslo parish registers and click on the Trefoldighet registers for the appropriate time period and find the one with marriages. About 30 seconds to find this one! Part 11 - Norwegian research I can also see an index telling me Adolf has a confirmation record in 1873 in Eidsvoll parish, so I'll look that up in the parish registers.  Eidsvoll parish is not within Christiania, but a rural parish just ou tside, so after I have selected 'Digitised Parish Registers' from the home page, I need to select under 'Velg fylke:' 'Akershus', the rural county next to Christiania. The index has told me the confirmation is in the Klokkerbok for Eidsvoll prestegjeld 1871-1877, so I can go straight to the correct register and click on confirmations for 1873. He appears in the 1885 census for Fjeldgade 19, Petrus' congregation, Christiania , along with his father's family. Part 8 - Norwegian research I should mention here that Adolf's wife's name differs in various records. So far she is recorded as Jensine Fredrikke Charlotte Jensen, Charlotte Jensen, Charlotte Holm and Charlotte Bakke . Where the 'Holm' comes into it, I don't know, either an error, or most likely will be her father's name, even though he was recorded as ' Lauritz Jensen ' in her marriage record. Although it is more likely in the late 1800s, never expect a Norwegian (or worse Danish!) name to be the same from one record to another. Their names will always be 'within the rules', but the rules are extensive! And spelling is all in the hand of the scribe. I've never found naming to be a problem, in fact it is often very helpful - there are a lot of clues in names. Part 7 - Norwegian research Time to work out what these entries in familysearch mean when they say 'Oslo, Oslo' for a parish name. Signe Marie Bakke was baptised and buried in 'Oslo, Oslo' and the source citation for the baptism tells me t he film number is 1282504. I can check the LDS catalogue for Oslo, Norway and enter the film number and see what parishes come up. Only two, and only one of those has baptisms in 1889, the year I am looking for, and it is Kampen. Now I can look for Reidar's baptism, which I still haven't found on familysearch. Back to the Digital Archives of Norway, positive I will now find Reidar's baptism in the Kampen parish register. As I know he was born abt 1893, I'll start in 1892 and work through to 1894. Kampen is a big city parish, hence I am reluctant to trawl through pages of baptisms without good reason, and in the back of my mind I am wondering why he is not on familysearch if other older siblings baptised in Kampen ar...

Part 2 - Norwegian research First step for researching any Scandinavian immigrant to Australia is to establish as much possible relevant information from Australian records. Immigration indexes, passenger lists, naturalisation certificates, service records, death indexes (may give parent's names), other random records in the Australian National Archives, or the relevant State Archives, newspape rs online (Trove), family information, marriage/death certificates, etc.  Hopefully somewhere in all that hunting, you will come up with at least an approximate year of birth, maybe a parent name, a place of birth, a former residence or the nearest large town to where they lived. In this case, I've found all I need to know with a quick online search of the National Archives. First stop -  www.familysearch.org. Part 1 - Norwegian research I've been given the task at Genealogy Sunshine Coast to research the origins of a man that appears in a couple of our research projects of late and thought I would post my efforts as I go along.  Reidar Toralf Bakke was a young Norwegian man living in Australia when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on the 17th April 1916. In his service record, availabl e from the National Archives of Australia, he states he was born in Christiania (Oslo) Norway, is a Norwegian subject, age 24 and a farm labourer.  He lists his next of kin as his father, Adolf Bakke , of 17 Holand Gaden, Christiania, Norway. The records tell us that Reidar was of fair complexion, light blue eyes, fair hair, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 9 stone and had some tattoos on his arms. Reidar fought in France and was wounded in action (severe gunshot wound in the right arm) in October 1917 and returned to Australia for discharge in April 1918. He died in 1947 and was bur...
